Lapis Lazuli - The Magic of Blue

Lapis Lazuli means in Latin blue rock, and the ancient had understood that this fascinating material was a rock, not a mineral. Although it is the mineral lazurite that gives the stone its cherished colour blue. From ancient time the only known great quarry was in the mountains of present Afghanistan. The exhibition shows antique objects from the Middle East and Egypt.
Since grounded lapis lazuli has been for century the main and more expencive pigment for the colour blue, the show presents the history of the primary colour until the 19th inventions of the chimical industry. In 1957 the contemporary artist Yves Klein created a synthetic colour thenceforth known as International Klein Blue.
