Church of Santo Spirito
Santo Spirito is the main church in the Oltrarno, the southern bank of the river Arno. The simple and light architetture is due to the genius of Brunelleschi. In the thirty-eight niche-chapels there are many precious paintings by Maso di Banco, Filippino Lippi, Alessandro Allori and many other artists.
In the centre of the nave a beautiful Baroque ciborium shines with commesso, the Florentine mosaic, made from semi-precious stones. The Sacristy was realized by the Renaissance architect Giuliano da San Gallo and nowadays holds the early work by Michelangelo, the wooden Crucifix.
