Church of San Lorenzo
The impressive Complex of San Lorenzo testifies the long and prestigious history of the church. The first building was the first cathedral of Florence. The ancestor of the Medici family, Giovanni di Bicci entrusted Filippo Brunelleschi for the renovation of San Lorenzo. As time passed the Medici family continued to appoint great artists such Michelangelo Buonarroti to work in the church they elected as mausoleum. Brunelleschi’s simple and rational architecture and Donatello’s plastic decoration render the Old Sacristy a mastepiece of Renaissance art. Inside the church other works by Donatello prove the close connection between the sculptor and the Medici family, such as the two pulpits in the main nave, his last endeavor. The Ressurection pulpit shows again its gilding thanks to the last restoration. Donatello also received a sepulcture in the cript, a really prestigious resting place for the favorite artist of Cosimo de Medici.
