The Accademia Gallery
The Accademia Gallery holds the major collection of sculptures by Michelangelo in the world: the seven marble statues of the David, the Prisoners, the St. Matthew.
The visit mostly concentrates on the figure of Michelangelo Buonarroti, one of the most appreciated artist of all times. The variety of the collections allows to explore and discover many other masterpieces.
The collection of plaster casts by Lorenzo Bartolini plays an important role in the history of the Accademia as art educational institute.
In the section of the Accademia Gallery dedicated to the Cherubino Conservatory a permanent exhibition shows the Collection of Musical Instruments. The highlight of the Conservatory’s collection is the Stradivarious viola from the Medici Quintet.
Then the museum exhibits a beautiful selection of Medieval and Renaissance paintings, from the 13th century gold-ground panels to the massive late-Gothic polyptichs; from 15th century wedding chests to Perugino altarpieces.
